Introduction
There are about 6000 known species of Arctiinae in the neotropical
region. Most are noxious to birds and have aposematic or diematic
warning coloration.
There are about 80 species in the genus
Hypercompe, variously distributed
across the Americas.
Most
Hypercompe species have a translucent
white ground colour, characteristically patterned with numerous oval
rings or solid blackish spots on each forewing. The hindwings of
many species have a lobe at the tornus. In most species the abdomens
is marked with blue or yellow. If the moths are molested by birds
they expose the abdomen, and exude noxious fluids from the thorax.
Hypercompe cunigunda is found in
Guyana, Surinam, Brazil, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.
