Introduction

There are about 6000 known species of Arctiinae in the neotropical region. Most are noxious to birds and have aposematic or diematic warning coloration.

There are 47 species in the genus Ormetica, distributed variously from Mexico to Bolivia. Almost all of the species are strongly marked in dark brown and orange, and in most cases the pattern follows that of packardi, often with the addition of yellow or orange lines along the veins. The abdomen of all Ormetica species is tipped with metallic blue, and there are usually blue scales on the head.

Ormetica sypilus is only known from Surinam and Peru but undopubtedly also occurs in Venezuela and Ecuador.
